Gay Sheep and the Rainbow Wool Project

Some threads convey history, others speak of innovation, and a few manage to become a symbol. Rainbow Wool is one of those exceptional cases.

Born in Germany, this project goes far beyond fashion. It starts with a simple yet powerful question: What if wool could be an act of visibility and social justice?

From there, a group of people combined creativity, commitment, and craftsmanship to turn the wool of homosexual rams —animals that the traditional industry considers “worthless”— into garments and accessories full of meaning.

The result is not just a limited collection, but an open declaration in favour of diversity, respect, and LGBTQIA+ equality. A proposal that demonstrates that fashion, when done with intention, can be a platform for social change.

At Hilaturas Jesús Rubio, where we have been producing technical and sustainable yarns for more than 50 years, we see in Rainbow Wool an inspiring example: an initiative that links artisanal know-how with a cause that transcends any trend.

What is Rainbow Wool?

Rainbow Wool is the first fashion collection made with the wool of homosexual rams, rescued and cared for on a farm in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, owned by shepherd Michael Stücke, a member of the Gayfarmer association.

A purpose behind the colour

These rams, deemed worthless in industrial breeding and often sent to the slaughterhouse, find in Rainbow Wool a refuge, and their wool becomes yarn and a declaration: a fashion piece with purpose that supports LGBTQIA+ equality.

Conscious and collaborative creation

  • The initiative was driven by the Serviceplan Group agency, which purchased and rescued the animals and developed the entire project identity.

  • Designers such as Kilian Kerner and Danny Reinke created exclusive pieces —from haute couture garments to accessories like patches and laces—, and singer Bill Kaulitz, from Tokio Hotel, is the campaign ambassador and has sponsored two rams, Karl and Wolli.

Fashion with impact and transparent solidarity

The online shop offers products such as patches, caps, laces, and balls of wool, all made in Europe through artisanal and responsible production.

In addition, there is the option to sponsor a ram from €1 —equivalent to one day of animal care—, with a personalised certificate as proof of support.

All proceeds and donations go to LSVD+ (Queer Diversity Association of Germany), which drives projects worldwide, especially in places where LGBTQIA+ persecution remains a threat.

A symbol of creative resistance

This project has received attention and recognition:

  • The media and the public highlight how Rainbow Wool transforms a marginalised resource into a driver of pride and solidarity.

  • Auctions have been held for unique pieces, such as the outfit designed for Bill Kaulitz and signed accessories, with proceeds entirely donated to LSVD+.

Rainbow Wool has become an example of “activism in thread”, where each product acquires a special meaning and proves that fashion can be a platform for LGBTQIA+ rights visibility, without renouncing aesthetics, quality, or ethics.
